Riding the wave of success with two smash-hit Showmax Originals in 2023, “Adulting” (Seasons 1 & 2) and “Outlaws,” Tshedza Pictures launches into the new year with its latest Showmax Original: “Youngins.” This gripping teen drama unfolds in the halls of the fictional Olifantsfontein High School.

The show stars Ayakha Ntunja (known for her role as Thembi in MTV Shuga S3) as Amo, the sweet, determined newcomer with clear life goals. She’s joined by Kealeboga Masango, famous as Zinhle from Rhythm City, portraying Buhle – the school’s charismatic “it” girl.

The cast expands with Lebohang Lephatsoana as Tumelo, a flamboyant, confident character addicted to social media; Toka Mtabane (young Tau in “Five Fingers for Marseilles”) as the charming and popular Khaya, Buhle’s boyfriend; and Thabiso Ramotshela (Morena in “The River”) playing Mahlatsi Maleka, a brainy yet unconventional student. This dynamic group, dubbed the “famous five,” embarks on a thrilling journey through the highs and lows of boarding school life, all while grappling with the complexities thrown their way by the adult world.

Joining this ensemble are Thabile Tau as Sefako, the respected head boy; Amo Telekelo as Palesa, a proud and open grade 10 student; Tshepo Matlala as the class clown Tshepo; Lihle Ngubo as Zinhle, a ninth-grader harboring a dark secret; and Katlego Moloke as Alex, a non-binary tenth grader.

The cast also features prominent figures like SAFTA winner Loyiso MacDonald (Kagiso in “The Queen”) as Principal Mthembu, DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Award winner Sanna Mchunu (Zodwa in “Gomora”) as Matron Lulu, and Keneilwe Matidze (Petronella in “Reyka”) as Pearl “Miss SA” Buthelezi.

Tshedza Pictures’ executive producer Phathu Makwarela reflects on the era dominated by youth dramas like “Party of Five” and “Dawson’s Creek,” noting a recent shift towards all-family viewing and a decline in youth-focused dramas. “Youngins” is crafted as a response to today’s generation, offering content that resonates authentically with their experiences.

Phathu emphasizes Tshedza Pictures’ unique approach to each show, highlighting their first foray into youth drama with “Youngins” and their careful curation of a writers’ room that mirrors their target audience. The show promises to be a revealing glimpse into the lives of Generation Z, a demographic navigating a rapidly changing world.

Director Themba Mfebe (of “Adulting”) concurs, describing “Youngins” as a raw, honest portrayal of a generation carving out its identity, penned by young writers who intimately understand their lived realities.

“Youngins” debuts on Showmax from February 12, 2024, with three new episodes dropping every Thursday.
