The game-changing Showmax has officially launched, revolutionizing streaming in Africa after a joint vision by MultiChoice, Comcast’s NBCUniversal, and Sky was announced ten months ago. The new Showmax boasts a refreshed brand and an extensive content lineup delivered on a robust streaming platform.

Central to this offering is the groundbreaking world-first standalone Premier League plan for mobile, offering all 380 games live on Showmax Premier League for just R69 a month. Two additional plans are available: Showmax Entertainment on mobile for an incredible R39 a month at launch, and the Showmax Entertainment plan, with a reduced monthly price from R99 to R89.

Marc Jury, CEO of Showmax, highlighted the immense potential of Showmax Premier League, aligning with Africa’s 450 million smartphones and over 250 million football enthusiasts. Richard Masters, Premier League CEO, expressed excitement about the initiative, emphasizing the Premier League’s significant following in Africa.

The success of Showmax’s streaming ambitions in Africa relies on a new technical platform designed for scale and built by thousands of engineers from the Peacock streaming platform. With a track record of streaming major events, including the Super Bowl, FIFA World Cup, Olympics, and WrestleMania, Peacock’s technology ensures a world-class streaming experience for Showmax.

The new Showmax also introduces a captivating entertainment universe with 21 new Showmax Originals launching in February and a 150% increase in production output compared to the previous year. MultiChoice’s partnership with Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky guarantees a continuous supply of popular titles from renowned brands, ensuring a diverse content lineup.

Calvo Mawela, MultiChoice Group CEO, emphasized Showmax’s focus on the African market, leveraging the vast creative and commercial presence of MultiChoice. Showmax aims to revolutionize streaming in Africa in 2024 with its powerful streaming service.

Showmax’s commitment to customer access includes being the first streaming service in Africa to enable mobile downloads for offline viewing and the launch of a mobile-only plan. The competitive new price points are complemented by a growing network of payment options, facilitated by Moment, a MultiChoice joint venture partner.

The new Showmax app will roll out in app stores from January 23, 2024, as part of a phased migration process across 44 markets. Existing Showmax customers will receive communication on accessing the new app, with the full launch expected in all markets by February 12, 2024.
